Bone and Sinus Grafting

Bone and Sinus Grafting: Restore Your Oral Health with Regenerative Surgery

At Starbody Dental, we're proud to provide our patients with comprehensive, well-rounded restorative dental care, including regenerative bone and sinus grafting. While bone grafting might sound complex, modern oral surgery tools and techniques have turned it into a fairly simple procedure. Our office is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and surgical tools that allow us to perform bone grafting procedures in our office.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting (also referred to as a bone graft) is a type of regenerative surgery used to trigger and support the regeneration of bone matter in targeted areas of the mouth. This minor surgical procedure replaces lost bone with a graft while helping to create the proper environment for bone regeneration.

Common Bone Grafting Procedures

Ridge Augmentation

Ridge augmentation is used to restore the natural contour of a patient's alveolar ridges to strengthen and bolster the bone matter that supports the teeth.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift procedure is used to restore and strengthen the upper jawbone when the maxilla has significantly degenerated and there is no longer adequate separation between the sinuses and the maxillary teeth.

Why You Might Need a Bone Graft

Bone grafting is often needed as a result of jawbone degeneration that can occur as a result of:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Other infections
  • Untreated tooth loss
  • Traumatic tooth extraction
  • Long-term denture wear
  • Congenital conditions

Bone grafting procedures can be used to:

  • Save exiting teeth that could be lost as a result of nearby bone degeneration.
  • Prevent problems following a tooth extraction
  • To prepare for a dental implant placement procedure
  • To improve the aesthetic balance between the teeth and gums
  • To restore bone structure lost as a result of congenital bone degeneration such as condylar resorption

What to Expect When Undergoing a Bone Graft Procedure

The bone grafting treatment process varies depending on the type of bone graft a patient needs and the reason why they are receiving it. While the specific procedures and techniques for a ridge augmentation differ from those of a sinus lift, patients can expect a similar treatment process, recovery period, and treatment journey.

Treatment begins with a consultation and diagnostic imaging. During this appointment, our dentist examines the patient and their diagnostic images to create a surgical treatment plan that is fully coordinated with the patient's overall dental treatment plan and goals. We also use this appointment to talk with the patient about what to expect on the day of their procedure and how to prepare. We will discuss all relevant medical history, medications, and supplements to ensure the patient is fully prepared and receives the right type of sedation for the procedure.

During the procedure, patients are typically sedated and always fully numbed with a local anesthetic. The surgical technique used depends on the type of bone graft the patient receives. However, it will typically involve a small incision in the gum tissue that allows the dentist access to place the bone graft. We then use sutures to close the incision.

We will provide the patient with thorough post-operative aftercare and recovery instructions. Including any medication, care, oral hygiene modifications, and/or lifestyle and dietary restrictions. Bone grafting procedures are typically followed by a recovery period lasting about six months in which the patient's bone tissue regenerates.
